M&S ENCYCLOPEDIA: INTRODUCTION

in 1999, while working at ice, i participated in the design and construction of mcclelland & stewart's long-running annual encyclopedia cdrom, the canadian encyclopedia 2000. this massive project took over a year to complete, and was one of the most ambitious uses of flash-on-cdrom of its time.

the encyclopedia itself is broken into two parts: 1) "find," where you use an application-style interface to search the articles and content of the encyclopedia itself, and 2) "explore," where you discover canada's history in a series of interactive modules, or "interactivities". working with sean patrick (art director) and teams at ice and m&s, i had the interesting privilege of producing the interactivities, from conception to design to realization.

here i present seven of my favourite pieces, starting with a "retrospective," the first of the interactivites i developed. all of the content was produced in flash 3, with lots of movie-clip tricks providing memory in the interfaces. i'd like very sincerely to thank james porter, lead production flasher, for his tireless efforts in helping me create such an enormous body of work. and thanks also to simon edwards, an audio producer with great sensitivity and willingness to collaborate.

before you jump in, i should warn you that the movies contain content intended for use with a high-speed cdrom drive, so the downloads will be long on slow modems. the interactivities were originally shown full screen on 600x800 minimum resolution, but i've scaled them down so they'll fit in a browser window (which is why some of the lines and text look fuzzy).
